Album was a steady seller for EMI, remaining in their catalogue for 11 years; collaborative compilation produced by EMI and the DMA; songs selected and sequenced by Dean (as his favourites of Dean’s Capitol output); sleeve notes by Bernard as follows:
“There has been so much said about Dino Paul Crocetti, Born June 7th, 1917, in Steubenville Ohio that does not need to be repeated here. A career in the entertainment business started for Dean Martin in 1943 when he was 26 years of age, and he has steadily proved to the public and to himself that he could tackle most chapters of showbusiness and be successful.
With over fifty films and eighteen gold albums to his credit, Dean now rates as one of the very few select entertainers of the world. His career consisted of films and recordings, plus radio, TV shows and cabaret. At one time, Dean was the highest paid performer for television variety series of his own, still appearing regularly on American screens, plus regular appearances at the renowned MGM Grand Hotel, Las Vegas.
Cabaret is Dino’s favourite work in entertaining the public, but his singing voice is the most pleasing and direct contact that we can have; after all, thanks to the invention of recorded sound, we can hear Dino wherever we go!
As far as I am concerned, some of the most beautiful songs that Dean ever recorded were for Capitol in the mid-fifties, and a good selection of them appears on this album.
A particular favourite of mine is HOW DO YOU SPEAK TO AN ANGEL? This comes from the 1953 Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis comedy Living It Up which also featured another song included here, MONEY BURNS A HOLE IN MY POCKET.
All of the songs presented here come from what I call the ‘Classic’ Capitol period for Dean. He recorded some outstanding ballads in those years and even the sixteen chosen for this album are only part of the Capitol era that gave Dean gold records and best sellers and firmly established him in the music business for evermore.
Dean Martin is unique in his approach to entertainment, which has made him successful for over thirty-five years and, like a select handful of other entertainers, a legend in his own lifetime.
I sincerely hope that the selection chosen by me for this album will soothe and relax you, because amidst all the various kinds of music today, one cannot help listening to the voice of Dean Martin.
Sit down, relax and listen…to The Classic Dino…!!!!
